Business Process Re-Engineering (BPR)
Also known as: business process reengineering, process reengineering, bpr, process redesign
Business Process Re-Engineering is the fundamental review and redesign of existing business processes to achieve major improvements in efficiency, cost, speed, quality, or customer service. Rather than making small adjustments to an existing workflow, BPR examines whether the process itself should be reorganized or replaced. It often involves eliminating unnecessary steps, changing responsibilities, automating activities, and using technology to create a more effective way of working.
BPR is used when an organization wants significant improvement rather than gradual optimization. A company may redesign processes such as order handling, procurement, invoicing, warehousing, or customer service to reduce delays, duplication, and operating costs. Successful BPR can improve productivity and service quality, but it usually requires careful planning because it may significantly change established roles, systems, and workflows.
