Bureau Veritas (BV)

Also known as: bv, bureau veritas, classification society, ship classification society

Bureau Veritas is an international classification society and testing, inspection, and certification organization. In shipping, it develops technical rules and standards used to assess the design, construction, condition, and maintenance of vessels and marine equipment. Surveyors inspect ships and review technical documentation to confirm that applicable class requirements and statutory regulations are being met.

A vessel classed by Bureau Veritas has been assessed against the society's technical standards and is subject to continuing surveys throughout its operating life. Classification helps shipowners, insurers, charterers, flag states, and other parties understand whether a vessel meets recognized standards for structural integrity, machinery, and safety. Bureau Veritas also performs statutory surveys and certification when authorized by flag administrations, supporting regulatory compliance and safe maritime operations.
