A former international customs tariff classification system developed by the Customs Cooperation Council (now the World Customs Organization) to provide a standardized method for classifying goods traded internationally.
The Brussels Tariff Nomenclature (BTN) was introduced in 1959 to promote uniform customs classification and facilitate international trade by providing a common tariff language for participating countries. It formed the basis for customs duties, trade statistics, and tariff negotiations in many parts of the world. In 1988, the BTN was replaced by the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (Harmonized System or HS), which is now the internationally accepted standard used by customs administrations worldwide.
