Bill of Materials Function

Also known as: bill of materials function, bom function, materials planning function, bom management

The role of a Bill of Materials (BOM) in defining, organizing, and managing all components, materials, and assemblies required to manufacture a finished product throughout the production process.

The Bill of Materials function serves as the foundation for manufacturing, procurement, inventory management, and production planning. It links engineering design with purchasing and shop-floor operations by specifying exactly what materials are needed, in what quantities, and how they fit together. A well-maintained BOM helps ensure accurate material planning, cost estimation, production scheduling, and inventory control while reducing errors, delays, and waste. It also provides traceability and consistency throughout the product's lifecycle, from design and manufacturing to maintenance and replacement parts.
