Both Inclusive (BI)

Also known as: bi, both inclusive, both loading and discharging inclusive

A chartering and shipping term indicating that both loading and discharging operations are included in the stated freight rate, laytime, or contractual provision, unless otherwise specified.

Both Inclusive (BI) is commonly used in charter parties and freight quotations to show that the quoted terms apply to both the loading port and the discharge port. For example, if laytime is stated as '5 days BI,' the allowed time covers both loading and discharging operations under the agreed terms. Using BI avoids misunderstandings about whether a condition applies to only one end of the voyage or to both. It provides clarity in contracts and helps all parties understand their operational and financial responsibilities.
