BATTENS

Also known as: battens, cargo battens, hold battens, container battens

Wooden or metal strips fixed to the inside walls of a vessel's cargo hold or a shipping container to keep cargo away from the sides, allowing air circulation and reducing moisture damage.

Battens create a protective gap between the cargo and the walls of a vessel or container, allowing air to circulate freely and reducing the risk of condensation, mold, rust, and other moisture-related damage. They also help prevent cargo from rubbing directly against the steel walls, reducing the chance of physical damage during transit. Battens may be permanently installed as part of the vessel's structure or temporarily fitted depending on the type of cargo being carried. They are commonly used for moisture-sensitive cargo such as timber, paper products, machinery, and steel.
