Bar Coding

Also known as: bar coding, barcode scanning

A data identification system that uses printed machine-readable patterns (lines or squares) to encode shipment or product information for electronic scanning and tracking.

Bar Coding is a core operational tool in logistics, warehousing, and port operations. Each barcode represents specific data such as shipment number, container reference, product code, or inventory ID. When scanned, the system automatically retrieves the associated information in a database, reducing manual entry errors and increasing speed. In shipping, barcodes are used on cartons, pallets, bills of lading, warehouse receipts, and sometimes container seals. This allows cargo to be tracked from origin warehouse to final delivery point with real-time visibility. Bar coding is the black-and-white pattern you see on products in stores—when scanned, it instantly identifies what the item is and where it belongs.
