Banking System

Also known as: banking system, financial system

An organized structure of banks and regulated financial institutions that manage deposits, lending, payments, foreign exchange, trade finance, and settlement of monetary obligations between parties.

The Banking System is the financial backbone of international trade and shipping. It enables buyers and sellers in different countries to transact securely through mechanisms such as wire transfers, letters of credit (L/C), documentary collections, bank guarantees, and escrow services. In maritime operations, banks facilitate freight payments, vessel financing, bunker payments, port disbursements, and cargo settlements. They also manage currency conversion and credit risk between counterparties who may not know each other. Without the Banking System, global trade would rely on direct trust and physical cash, which is impractical and high risk. In simple terms, it is the secure payment and credit network that makes international shipping commercially possible.
