Average

Also known as: average, marine average

A maritime term describing loss, damage, or extraordinary expense incurred during a sea voyage.

Average is primarily used in marine insurance and casualty contexts. It is classified as General Average, where losses are shared proportionally among all voyage interests, or Particular Average, where losses are borne by the individual party affected. The concept governs how financial responsibility is allocated following incidents such as fire, grounding, or jettison. It is a foundational principle in maritime risk allocation.
