Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
Also known as: antilock brakes, abs braking system
A safety system that prevents wheels from locking during braking by automatically modulating brake pressure.
ABS improves vehicle control and stopping stability, especially on slippery surfaces. In commercial vehicles, ABS helps prevent jackknifing and loss of steering control. It is mandated in many jurisdictions for heavy trucks and trailers.
