Anchorage
Also known as: anchorage, anchoring area, roads
A designated area where vessels may anchor while awaiting instructions, berth availability, or clearance.
Anchorage refers to a specified sea area where vessels are permitted to anchor instead of remaining underway or alongside a berth. These areas are designated and regulated by port or maritime authorities and may be used for waiting, bunkering, quarantine, inspections, or operational standby. Conditions at anchorage, such as weather, depth, and holding ground, are carefully considered to ensure vessel safety. Time spent at anchorage can have contractual implications, particularly in relation to laytime, demurrage, or readiness under charter party terms.
