Above Deck (ABOVE DECK)

Above deck is used to describe cargo, equipment, or areas situated on the deck level of a vessel rather than inside enclosed holds. It commonly applies to containers, project cargo, deck machinery, and superstructure spaces. Items carried above deck are exposed to weather, sea spray, and wind, which affects stowage, lashing, and protection requirements. The term is frequently used in cargo descriptions, stowage plans, and operational instructions to distinguish between deck cargo and under-deck cargo. Above deck does not imply a specific position along the vessel’s length, only that the item is located on or above the deck surface.
