Voyage Charter

Also known as: spot charter, voyage contract

A contract where a shipowner agrees to carry cargo for a specific voyage in return for freight.

Under a voyage charter, freight is usually calculated per unit of cargo or as a lump sum. The shipowner retains control of the vessel and its operation. Laytime and demurrage are key contractual elements.
