Bill of Lading Clause

A contractual provision contained in or incorporated into a Bill of Lading that defines the rights, obligations, responsibilities, and liabilities of the carrier, shipper, consignee, and other parties involved in the shipment.
Bill of Lading clauses establish the legal terms under which cargo is transported and delivered. They commonly address issues such as carrier liability, freight payment, limitations of liability, dangerous goods, claims procedures, jurisdiction, force majeure, and dispute resolution. These clauses form part of the contract of carriage and are legally binding on the parties. Understanding them is essential because they determine how risks and responsibilities are allocated if cargo is lost, damaged, delayed, or subject to a dispute.
