Ballast Bonus

Also known as: ballast bonus, ballast payment

A lump-sum payment agreed in a charter party to compensate a vessel for repositioning in ballast to a loading port.

Ballast Bonus is negotiated in voyage charters when a vessel must sail empty to reach the loading area. It offsets fuel costs, time, and opportunity expenses incurred before cargo loading begins. The amount reflects prevailing freight markets, distance to the loading port, and vessel availability. It is typically paid in addition to freight and documented within the charter party agreement.
