Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF)

Also known as: baf, bunker adjustment factor

A freight surcharge applied by carriers to compensate for fluctuations in marine bunker fuel prices.

BAF is commonly used in liner shipping to adjust freight rates in response to changes in fuel costs. It is calculated based on fuel price indices and trade lane consumption assumptions. The surcharge is typically listed separately from base freight on invoices. It protects carriers from fuel market volatility while providing transparency to shippers. BAF mechanisms may be revised periodically depending on contractual terms and market conditions.
