A nautical term describing a direction, alignment, or position that runs across the width of a vessel, from port side to starboard side.
Athwartships refers to anything oriented laterally across a ship, perpendicular to the fore-and-aft (longitudinal) axis. The term is commonly used in naval architecture, stability calculations, and cargo stowage planning to describe transverse structures, bulkheads, beams, or cargo positioning. Proper athwartships distribution of weight is critical for maintaining transverse stability and preventing list. In cargo operations, equipment, lashings, or cargo units may be secured athwartships to control movement and balance. The term contrasts directly with fore-and-aft, which describes alignment along the vessel’s length.
