Always Accessible, Always Afloat is a port or berth condition stating that a vessel can access the berth at all times and can remain afloat without depending on tidal windows or intentionally touching the seabed. In practical terms, the vessel should be able to enter, remain alongside, and leave safely at any time.
AAAA confirms that the berth, approach channel, and surrounding waters provides sufficient depth for the vessel’s draft throughout all stages of the call, including arrival, berthing, cargo operations, and departure. This condition removes the need for tidal planning and reduces waiting time outside the port. It is commonly referenced when assessing berth suitability, especially for larger or deeper-draft vessels. AAAA provides assurance that cargo operations can proceed without interruption caused by low water levels. It is also used to compare ports and terminals when evaluating operational efficiency and risk.
